The task of delivering a landmark multimillion pound regeneration project in one of Manchester’s most neglected neighbourhoods has been completed by Browns Construction Group.
The contract, worth £23 million, witnessed Browns overhaul an area of Plymouth Grove which lies on a major gateway into the city centre.
The building’s island location has dictated its unusual design – a triangular shape ranging from six to thirteen storeys.
Plymouth Grove now provides accommodation for junior doctors, nurses and other key workers plus the city’s growing student population. At street level it provides retail and office accommodation creating a thriving community in a previously deserted district.
Construction Challenge:
Browns utilised its substantial experience to successfully operate within the restricted access site based on one of Manchester’s busiest road junctions.
A further challenge that was overcome was the construction of a natural airflow system in the building’s basement parking area. Designers and planners desire the Plymouth Grove building to have the smallest possible carbon footprint. In order to maximise energy efficiency, Browns constructed the airflow system as opposed to installing powered extraction systems.
