In the United Kingdom since 1998 the British Safety Council report that 66 young people have died at work, most of them during their first few months in a new job.
Work experience introduces young people to the world of work and is a valuable and essential part of their education. For many young people, the world of work is often a strange and confusing place. Inexperience and lack of trained judgement leaves them more at risk from accidents and damage to their health.
The lead organisation running the Young Persons Work Experience Initiative is Stockport MBC on behalf of the Association of Greater Manchester Authorities
Stockport Council’s Environmental Health and Trading Standards department is arranging a Health and Safety Road Show designed for students who are about to undertake work experience. Upon completion of the roadshow the students are invited to complete a questionnaire which gives them the chance to win a prize such as an iPod.
Browns Construction Group Limited are proud to be able to get involved with the initiative and provide sponsorship, Gavin King the Safety, Health, Environmental, Training & Quality Manager for Browns says:
"here at Browns we invest heavily in the health and safety of our staff and any communities close to our construction sites, getting involved in this initiative is a great opportunity for Browns to support such an initiative. For many years Browns have encouraged and fully supported both work experience students and apprenticeship schemes. The construction industry is a high risk environment with a multitude of challenges to over-come in ensuring the well being and the health safety of all employees, sub-contractors, clients and visitors on our projects. If we can help raise awareness and support such initiatives it vastly reduces the risk of any young person(s) being a government statistic. Education, training andawareness is essential to ensure the young work experience students of today are aware of workplace health and safety, and I believe this forward thinking initiative presents this opportunity and I commend Stockport on their groundbreaking initiative, which we are delighted to have supported as a local contractor. We look forward to establishing a long and positive relation ship with Stockport MBC and their on going work experience initiative".
