Browns To Build Barnsley’s Largest Mixed Use Development

Cheshire based Browns Construction Group Ltd has landed a £32m contract for a significant new mixed use development in Barnsley.

The project, called Gateway Plaza, is the first of three planned phases of redevelopment in what is considered to be the town’s largest ever regeneration project.

This first phase is expected to take 98 weeks to complete and when finished will offer a monumental 132,310 sq ft of residential accommodation, comprising 189 apartments laid out over 15 storeys, plus 12,137 sq ft of office space over seven storeys.

In addition to the proposed buildings, Browns are in negotiation for the next two phases of development which include a further 100 residential apartments and plans for a hotel, restaurant/bar. The total value of the whole scheme will be in excess of £55million and will conclude at the end of 2011.

Now in its 147th year of successful business, Browns were the obvious choice for this particular project because of the vast experience and expertise they have in the high rise inner city residential housing market. The site is located along a busy access route into the thriving town centre creating logistical challenges which less experienced builders might have struggled to overcome. The company’s proven track record of delivering projects of this size on budget and on, if not ahead of, programme was also a crucial consideration as construction is set around a tight timeline.

The scale and value of this project are a good example to the market of how much Browns have become known as experts in high rise construction.

Work on the development will commence January 2008.

Browns have already gained considerable experience of the site because of their involvement as the management contractor for the four storey basement car park.

The management contract for the basement started April 2007 and is expected to be completed in a four phased programme with the first phase completing simultaneously with the start of the first phase of the design and build superstructure contract.
