Local construction company rides the recession storm through investment in training
Cheadle based construction company, Browns Construction Group Limited, is weathering the current economic storm and has managed to grow its business in a marketplace that radically decreased during the past 12 months, and working with ConstructionSkills has been of benefit during this period.
Maintaining staff training has played an integral part in helping them secure tender opportunities and experience business success, despite the recent economic downturn.
The company has worked with ConstructionSkills, the construction industry’s training board, for a number of years, and has recently collaborated with it to put into place a number of training initiatives to ensure that all its employees have the opportunity to progress professionally and bring additional value to their job and the business. Its Continual Professional Development (CPD) programme has enabled the company to ensure that its internal team, alongside sub contractors, is fully trained to the highest level and its investment in management review workshops has ensured that the skills needed to run a company during difficult economic times, and ensure that it is fit to face the upturn, are in place.
Gavin King, Safety Manager of Browns Construction Group Ltd, credits the company’s continued success and enviable health and safety track record to its correctly trained and qualified employees. It has achieved a number of accolades including Silver Achievement Award RoSPA 08, Gold Achievement Award RoSPA 09 and Considerate Contractors scheme Bronze National award in 2009 due to its ability to demonstrate investment in training and ongoing CPD through its partnership with ConstructionSkills.
Gavin said: “It’s been a tough 12 months but largely due to the extensive training programmes we have in place and the internal investment given to it, we can now prove that we are committed to training, which is becoming ever more important in winning contracts. Implementing a dedicated training plan supports our tenders for a wide range of work, helping us to maintain our position in the market place and ensure the ongoing success of the company.”
Yan Cockayne, ConstructionSkills Company Development Advisor in Cheshire, added:
“It is vital that companies in Cheshire keep one step ahead of their competitors and one way of doing this is to ensure that the workforce is fully trained and maximising its capabilities. Developing a training plan allows companies to respond to new business opportunities. The construction sector has a target to improve its business performance each year and have a fully qualified workforce by 2010. Although the immediate outlook can be bleak at times, construction output in the North West is expected to grow by 1.4 per cent between now and 2012 and companies with a skilled workforce will be able to benefit from this growth.”
