Browns are proud to announce that the prestigious £47m Gateway Plaza Scheme in Barnsley is now completed and the final phase has been handed over to the client. Gateway Plaza is an exciting mixed-use development which will anchor the regeneration of Barnsley and provide hundreds of new jobs for the town.
The Architect Will Alsop prepared a Masterplan for Barnsley and proposed to transform the South Yorkshire town by modelling it on a Tuscan hill village, complete with its own walls.
A model of Alsop’s masterplan for Barnsley was commissioned by Yorkshire Forward and is now being showcased at the Gateway Plaza Scheme.
Plans for the Gateway Plaza scheme were first unveiled in 2004 by GWP, a joint venture between Quest Property and Landmark Development Projects. Over the last six years the development has generated incredible interest in South Yorkshire and come to symbolise the ‘Remaking Barnsley’ strategy, which will transform the town over the next thirty years to create a vibrant, thriving and enjoyable metropolis.
Gateway Plaza is split into four principal elements: a four-storey sub-basement car park with 548 parking spaces; a distinctive curved office building which provides 96,000 sq ft of grade A space over six floors; a 15-storey stepped residential building offering 188 one, two and three apartments, ground-floor retail space; and a 110-bed Premier Inn, the first branded new-generation town centre hotel ever built in Barnsley.
The site includes 21,000 sq ft of retail and leisure space, and centres upon a charming public square, providing a clear central landmark.
The team from Browns have delivered phased completions of the scheme from July 2009 to overall completion in May 2010, in addition to achieving a BREEAM rating of VERY GOOD for the commercial building and a Considerate Constructors Bronze Award.
Cliff Hawksworth Construction Director said: “The team working on Gateway Plaza have performed exceptionally well and demonstrated their ability and experience by producing such an outstanding and stylish city centre plaza that Barnsley and Browns will always be proud of”.
